Jay Shah Becomes 5th Indian ICC Chairman: Complete List of ICC Chairman and Presidents
Jay Shah has taken over as ICC Chairman from Greg Barclay with a mission to take cricket globally. He is known for his leadership and business skills and will be crucial in getting cricket into the Olympics. He takes over at a time of significant change at the ICC, with governance reforms and fan base expansion.
The ICC Chairman is the face of international cricket. The position was honorary after the ICC reforms in 2014 but has grown into a full-time leadership role. Greg Barclay, the current Chairman, announced he would step down on November 30, 2024, and there was speculation that Jay Shah, the BCCI Secretary, would be the front-runner to lead the ICC.
ICC Chairmen (2014-2024)
Jay Shah is the Independent Chair of the ICC and took over from Greg Barclay, who completed his term. Shah, also the BCCI Secretary, started his term on December 1 after Barclay’s exit was announced in August. Shah will have to take cricket global, especially since the sport will make its Olympic debut in 2028. His influence in cricket and business will be vital to achieving this despite internal governance issues.
Shashank Manohar stepped down as ICC Chairman on June 30, 2020, after more than four years in the role. Imran Khwaja, the ICC Deputy Chairman, was the interim Chairman until the next election in November.

ICC Presidents vs ICC Chairman
In 2016, the ICC abolished the President’s position and made the Chairman’s role purely honorary. For the ICC chairmanship election, 16 votes are cast, and a candidate now needs just a simple majority of nine votes (51%) to win, unlike before, when a two-thirds majority was required. Jay Shah, who currently heads the ICC’s essential Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) subcommittee, is a significant player in cricket administration and enjoys strong backing from most of the 16 voting members.
