Can Tamim Iqbal Fix Bangladesh Cricket?

Tamim Iqbal

Bangladesh cricket is going through a difficult phase, and all eyes are now on Tamim Iqbal. After the previous board was removed due to corruption allegations, Tamim was given charge as the head of a temporary committee. His main goal is clear, to bring back trust and stability to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). But the path ahead is not easy.

The earlier board, led by Aminul Islam (Bulbul), was dissolved after a probe found serious issues in the election process. However, Bulbul has denied all the allegations and even claimed that Tamim’s current committee is not valid. This has created confusion and debate across the country. The issue has even reached Parliament, where political parties are blaming each other. This shows that the situation is not just about cricket, it has become a political matter as well.

Tamim’s biggest challenge will be to stay focused despite all this pressure. He has already said that he wants to take part in the next official BCB elections. This means whatever decisions he makes now will directly affect his future. One wrong step could damage his reputation.

One major task for Tamim is to rebuild relationships with international cricket bodies. Bangladesh’s ties with the ICC and especially with the Board of Control for Cricket in India have become weak. This happened after the previous board decided to boycott the T20 World Cup, mainly due to political reasons. That decision shocked the cricket world, and Bangladesh received very little support from other countries. Now, Tamim must repair these relationships and ensure Bangladesh remains active in future international tours.

Another big issue is the Dhaka Premier League (DPL), which is very important for domestic cricket in Bangladesh. Right now, the tournament is not happening, and many players are unhappy because it affects their income. The situation is complicated because some clubs had boycotted earlier competitions, and now there is confusion about promotion and relegation between divisions. Tamim has said he wants to restart the DPL soon, but solving all these problems will take time and smart decisions.

Apart from this, Tamim also needs to conduct free and fair elections within three months. This is one of the main responsibilities of the current committee. The previous board was removed because of election issues, so Tamim must be very careful. He needs to make sure that all stakeholders, players, officials, and organisers feel the process is fair and transparent.

There is also another concern. The current board members are relatively inexperienced, which could make decision-making difficult. At the same time, not everything from the previous board was bad. Some long-term projects were useful, and Tamim will need to decide whether to continue them or start fresh.

At just 37 years old, Tamim has become the youngest BCB president in history. As a former captain, he understands the game well, but running a cricket board is very different from playing on the field. Even past leaders like Faruque Ahmed and Bulbul struggled in this role.

In the end, Tamim’s success will depend on how well he handles pressure and makes decisions. His past achievements as a cricketer will not matter much here. What matters is whether he can rebuild trust, manage the system, and take Bangladesh cricket in the right direction.
