How Suryakumar Yadav Became India’s World Cup-Winning Captain?
Indian cricket has produced many great captains over the years. Names like Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni, and Rohit Sharma are remembered for leading India to World Cup glory. Now another name has joined that list, Suryakumar Yadav.
India’s T20 World Cup triumph has turned Suryakumar into one of the most talked-about captains in Indian cricket. Not many people expected him to lead the national team, but the tournament victory has changed how fans see him.
The Unexpected Captaincy Decision
After Rohit Sharma retired following the 2024 T20 World Cup win, many believed Hardik Pandya would become the next captain. He was already one of the senior players on the team and had leadership experience.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India took a different path. After discussions between chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir, the board felt Suryakumar Yadav was the right choice to lead the team.
The main reason was workload. Hardik Pandya already had major responsibilities with both bat and ball. Giving him captaincy as well could have added extra pressure. That decision opened the door for Suryakumar, and he made the most of it by leading India to a World Cup title.
The Journey Began in Mumbai
Suryakumar’s cricket journey started many years before this success. In December 2009, a young Suryakumar was playing at Bombay Gymkhana. That day, he played shots that were rarely seen on Mumbai grounds at the time, scoops, reverse sweeps, ramps and creative strokes.

A scout from the Rajasthan Royals franchise noticed his talent. The scout, Zubin Bharucha, was impressed when the youngster scored a century using a wide range of shots.
Soon after that performance, Suryakumar was invited for trials at Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Even there, he continued to play fearless shots, including a ramp over the field off fast bowler Kamran Khan.
Legendary spinner Shane Warne was also watching the trials. He liked Suryakumar’s batting, but the youngster was not picked because his fitness and fielding needed improvement at that time.
IPL Career and Turning Point
A few years later, Suryakumar began his IPL career with the Mumbai Indians. After some seasons, he moved to the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014.
Interestingly, his return to the Mumbai Indians happened because of an auction decision. Kolkata Knight Riders wanted both Suryakumar and Nitish Rana, but they could only afford one player due to budget limits. Eventually, they chose Rana, and Suryakumar returned to Mumbai Indians.
That decision turned out to be very important for his career. At the Mumbai Indians, he grew as a player and became one of the most dependable T20 batters in the league.
A Batting Style Ahead of Its Time
Former India cricketer Jatin Paranjpe believes Suryakumar’s batting style was ahead of its time.
In modern T20 cricket, players must score quickly and find gaps all around the field. Suryakumar mastered shots like the sweep, reverse sweep and ramp. He spent long hours practicing these strokes at the Parsee Gymkhana ground in Mumbai.
His idea was simple: in T20 cricket, you must make the most of the short time you spend at the crease. Instead of playing only traditional shots, he focused on attacking areas where fielders were not present.
A New Leadership Style
Suryakumar’s captaincy style is also different from many traditional leaders. Instead of controlling every move, he prefers to give players freedom.
According to him, teammates should feel like friends rather than being treated like juniors. When players are relaxed and confident, they can perform better on the field.
This approach also fits well with coach Gautam Gambhir’s philosophy, the team always comes before individual achievements. If a player feels the team needs quick runs, he should attack from the first ball.
Challenges Along the Way
Suryakumar’s journey was not always smooth. During the 2024-25 season, some reports suggested that a few Mumbai players were unhappy with his captaincy. His leadership was also questioned during that period.
But people close to him believed his time would come. They encouraged him to stay patient and keep performing with the bat.
The World Cup Moment
All those years of effort finally led to the biggest moment of his career. At Narendra Modi Stadium, Suryakumar led India to a historic T20 World Cup victory.
It was a special moment for the captain because he had made his international debut at the same venue in 2021 during a closed-door match played under COVID restrictions.
This time, the stadium was full. Nearly 90,000 fans celebrated as Suryakumar walked off the field as a World Cup-winning captain.
Suryakumar Yadav’s story shows that success in cricket often comes after years of patience and hard work. From a young batter playing creative shots in Mumbai maidans to leading India to a World Cup title, his journey has been remarkable.
Whether he will reach the legendary status of captains like Dhoni or Kapil Dev will be decided in the coming years. But one thing is clear: Suryakumar Yadav has already written his name in Indian cricket history.
