T20 World Cup 2024: Rain Threatens Sri Lanka’s Chances in Super 8 Qualification

Sri Lanka’s cricket team might get eliminated early from the T20 World Cup 2024. Their recent match against Nepal was canceled due to heavy rain at the Central Broward Regional Park in Florida. The weather was so bad that the teams couldn’t even start the game or have the toss.

The officials hoped the rain would stop and planned to check the field at 8:30 PM local time (6:00 AM IST), but the conditions didn’t improve. Even though they had time until 10:48 PM local time (8:18 AM IST) to start the game, it wasn’t possible to play. Because of this cancellation, Sri Lanka remains at the bottom of Group D with just 1 point and a Net Run Rate (NRR) of 0.777. They have lost all three of their matches so far.

Next Crucial Game for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s last group stage match is against the Netherlands on Sunday, June 16, at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St. Lucia. Nepal also faces tough upcoming games against South Africa and the Netherlands.

Sri Lanka’s Path to the Next Round

To advance to the next round, Sri Lanka must win their game against the Netherlands. Additionally, the Netherlands and Bangladesh should not win any of their remaining matches. Sri Lanka’s low NRR is another problem, as it’s the worst in their group.

Sri Lanka’s tournament started badly with a 6-wicket loss to South Africa, where they were bowled out for their lowest T20I score of 77 runs. They then lost by 2 wickets to Bangladesh. With their match against Nepal being washed out, Sri Lanka now needs a miracle to move on to the next stage.
