Can RCB Defend Their Title Without Strong Fast Bowling?
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are coming into IPL 2026 as defending champions. After 17 years of waiting, they finally won their first IPL trophy last season by defeating Punjab Kings in a close final. Now, the big question is, can they repeat that success?
One major positive for RCB is that their squad has mostly stayed the same. They have retained 17 players, which means the team has good stability and understanding. Their batting unit looks strong and settled, with players like Virat Kohli, Phil Salt and Devdutt Padikkal at the top, followed by Rajat Patidar, Jitesh Sharma and power-hitters like Tim David or Romario Shepherd.
However, the biggest concern for RCB this season is their fast bowling. Two key players are missing. Yash Dayal is out of the entire season, and Josh Hazlewood is likely to miss the early matches. This creates a big gap in their bowling attack.
To cover this, RCB have added new players like Mangesh Yadav and Jacob Duffy. Mangesh is a young left-arm pacer who can bowl at around 140 kmph, while Duffy could get chances early in the tournament. But both are not as experienced as Dayal or Hazlewood, which could put pressure on the team.
Another interesting point is the selection dilemma between Devdutt Padikkal and Venkatesh Iyer. RCB bought Iyer for ₹7 crore, but he may not get a place in the starting XI because the top order is already fixed. This shows that RCB have strong bench strength, but also some confusion in team selection.
A big boost for RCB is the return of M Chinnaswamy Stadium as their home ground. The stadium was closed after a tragic incident during last year’s celebrations, but now it is ready again for IPL 2026. RCB will play five matches here and two in Raipur. Playing at home could give them extra confidence.
Even with these positives, the pressure on RCB will be very high. They are no longer underdogs, they are champions now. Every team will come prepared to beat them.
In the end, RCB have a strong batting lineup and a settled squad, which gives them a good chance to perform well again. But their success will depend heavily on how they manage their bowling, especially in the absence of key fast bowlers.
If their new bowlers perform well, RCB can defend their title. But if the bowling struggles, it could be difficult for them to repeat last season’s success.
